ENGLISH LANGUAGE PROGRAM

(ELP) OVERVIEW

All levels of English proficiency are welcome at Elevation Preparatory Academy. Upon registration all non-native speakers of English are required to take an English language proficiency test. Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOFL) results are sufficient. The ELP program is a requirement for all non-native

English speakers and is graded on the pass/fail system. Students must pass each phase of ELP before enrolling into the traditional core curriculum. Program placement will be determined using the following factors:

  • English proficiency exam results.

  • Past academic performance

  • Grade / maturity level

The goal of the English Language Program (ELP) is to transition ESL (English as a second language) students into a traditional core curriculum with the educational tools needed to succeed. The ELP has 3 phases; progression from each stage is based on test results, course work, and teacher assessment and/or recommendation.  Once a student has graduated from the Adaptationphase, they are ready to be mainstreamed.

                                                          PHASES OF ELP

  1. ELP 1- Assimilation- Students will familiarize themselves with a traditional American classroom setting, peer interaction, student teacher relationship, etc. Students will be assigned a conversation group made up of other students enrolled in the program. Conversation groups will have regularly scheduled chat sessions throughout all phases of ELP. Through virtual immersion, observation, and peer interaction ESL students will become comfortable in their new learning environment.

  2. ELP 2-Accommodation-Students will complete modified assignments in English. Teachers will create lesson plans with ESL modifications (extra time, cooperative learning groups, etc).

  1. ELP 3- Adaptation-Students will be fully involved in classroom activities and assignments. Assignments and lesson plans are still modified and monitored by language coach, however ESL students are expected to adapt and complete required course work.

Achievement!– ESL students that have graduated from the ELP have demonstrated the skills necessary to succeed in a traditional English speaking classroom and are eligible to enroll in the traditional core curriculum.

Note:Promotion between phases is based solely on student comprehension of material and has no defined time limit.
